Summer EP
Summer EP
Aroy Dee [M>O>S>]
7 November, 2008 | 2.53AMOne of the most exciting musical developments of 2008 was a newly revived Dutch underground techno movement, led by the heavy hitting loops of 2000 And One, the funky tech house of Lauhaus, the minimal grooves of Kabale Und Liebe and the stunning house of Aroy Dee.
Unlike some of the formulaic bongo rhythms and ethnic vocals characterising the current deep house revival, Aroy Dee’s approach to house music is more melancholic, misshapen and expansive in its sources.
His five track EP ‘Summer’ is a prime example of the atmospheric house he’s able to deliver, which takes something from the old synths of Detroit and combines it with the minimal aesthetic of today’s software-induced electronic music proclamations.
Lead track ‘Summer’ is curious in its refusal to remain stale, evolving through repetitive house beats and warping synths.
More proof of Aroy Dee’s inventiveness comes in the form of ‘Summer’ (Dark Mix), which turns the mood upside down and dismantles the hope of the original into a drum heavy edit.
‘All That Remains’, which features Peel Seamus, gives a nod to acid techno but maintains a healthy balance of atmospheric pads. It’s moving, in its opaqueness.
Chicago house too gets drafted by Aroy Dee, whose ‘Life of Raw’ is a prime amalgamation of all that was great within Detroit techno and Chicago grooves.
The ranks of Dutch electronic music talent seemingly runs deep.
