Sub:stance celebrates two years

Next Friday, July 9, Sub:stance celebrates two years of bass mayhem at Berghain, that hallowed temple of boom. Given the occasion, the lineup fittingly delves to the heart of dubstep’s heaviest waters in the main room, with Digital Mystikz‘ Mala headlining a bill that also features Scuba, Appleblim, and Mount Kimbie; the other headliner is Berlin’s Monolake , whose music treads the line between dubstep and techno, and whose surround-sound live performance should make the Berghain resonate as you’ve never heard it before.

But if you thought that Sub:stance was only about “bass music”, think again: up in the Panorama Bar, MJ Cole two-steps to the top of the bill, a welcome return from the U.K. garage veteran. (Please, please, please let him play ‘Sincere’.) The Idjut Boys, meanwhile, draw a line back to an earlier form of garage music, with a set that should be heavy on house and classic disco. Sub:stance regulars John Osborn and Paul Spymania round out the Panorama lineup, along with Scuba, this time in his SCB guise—assuming he’s not too knackered from running those stairs.
