‘Strange World Beyond’ Piemont
‘Strange World Beyond’ Piemont
24 January, 2009 | 9.31AMPhunklarique
and Dejonka
, the duo responsible for the storming minimal track ‘Reflections In Plexiglass’ from earlier last year, have teamed up as live act Piemont
for their debut album, ‘Strange World Beyond’.
Above is the animated video produced by Sevra and Stas, and after the jump you’ll find a little chat with the Piemont blokes where they discuss the deep sea theme of their album, their newly launched imprint, and future plans.
How do you look back on the past 2 years?
Formerly Piemont
was supposed to be some kind of a side-project - a supplement to our solo releases of Phunklarique
& Dejonka
. But within two years we’d released 13 maxis, are about to release our debut full-length on My Best Friend and have produced about 13 remix works for other artists.
Anyway, ‘Carbonat’ can be considered our breakthrough. Being charted and played by many top DJs, Carbonat quickly gained great public interest and immediately entered the German Club Charts (DCC). It was quite surprising, as we didn’t expect such huge support.
Ever since, Piemont gradually changed to our creative main focus.
According to the press note, ‘Strange World Beyond’ is dedicated to the “deep sea”. What did you have in mind when producing the album?
All of our MBF
releases so far have been mostly functional peak time tunes produced for the dancefloor.
As we always had a special liking for ambient sounds, abstract electronica and emotional techno stuff, we wanted to present another side of our musical diversity by combining these influences on the album.
The deep sea theme just perfectly describes the atmosphere we wanted to express with our debut album, as the the album tracks appear deeper and more atmospheric compared to the earlier Piemont sound.
You have been touring as a live act for a while now. Can you give us an impression of a typical Piemont live performance?
Our live performance is changing steadily.
We always present a selection of our latest tracks and remixes, whether they are released or not.
When performing live, we modify our tracks by adding new loops and sound effects, and by creating individual cross fades between the songs.
Tell us about your own label Suchtreflex
. What are you working with now?
We had always planned to set up and work with own labels, where we’ll have for example the ability to choose remix artists or do the graphic part independently.
That’s why we launched ‘Suchtreflex’, which is intended to be a creative platform for our friends and our own productions, with a focus on modern sounding organic techno. Our current release is done by Amir & Kapara - our buddies from Mainz, respectively Zurich – which was recently released with great mixes by Phunklarique and Butch.
Expect many new artists and interesting releases coming up, including Monochrome
amongst others, and ourselves.
What are your musical roots?
Our musical ambitions set off in Hamburg as guitarists and singers in various songwriter/pop-punk bands.
During that period of time we actually gained our knowledge concerning arrangement and writing of songs, which still has an effect on today’s productions.
Your music is a mix of various genres in electronic music. What defines best your style?
We do not have a fixed style within our musical focus. Our aim is to produce music suitable for peak time as well as after hours and listening comfort.
Even though people often describe our music as so-called minimal techno, we’d mainly define our style as techno with elements of funk and house, as our style might be reduced sometimes, but we think it’s not “minimal”.
What are your plans for your future?
First of all we want to go on establishing Piemont as a live act.
Beside our forthcoming debut album also expect some new output on the production side: Especially Piemont remixes and both Phunklarique and Dejonka releases are in the pipeline.
