‘Stonehenge might have been a rave site’
25 January, 2009 | 6.40PMAn egg head from Huddersfield University in West Yorkshire, England, has proposed that Stonehenge may have been used as a giant concert venue, where pagans would have enjoyed “repetitive trance rhythms”.
Professor Robert Till, an expert in acoustic and music technology and a part time DJ, spent months studying the giant stones with computer models and acoustic analysis software, and even build a life-sized replica of Stonehenge in Maryhill, WA.
He determined that the structure’s massive stone slabs created “a very pleasant, almost concert-like acoustic” that would have been perfect for the amplification of a “repetitive trance rhythm.”
What’s more, his team discovered some rather bizarre acoustic phenomena from the landmark: “The most interesting thing is we managed to get the whole space [at Maryhill] to resonate, almost like a wine glass will ring if you run a finger around it,” Till said, “while that was happening, a simple drum beat sounded incredibly dramatic. The space had real character, it felt that we had gone somewhere special.”
