Lighters ready, prepare to flash back: culture-watchers preoccupied with the creeping return of all things ‘90s will surely feel vindicated by the fact that Stereo MCs are back; no matter what they’ve done since, the London group will always be remembered for their proto-big-beat 1992 anthem “Connected.”

But based on the evidence of their new single, they’re hardly stuck in the past: “Boy” is a powerful, piano-driven tune that’s not afraid to engage with the emotions that come with getting older, wiser, and (inevitably) a little more jaded. (And for those ‘90s aficionados amongst us, fear not: the breakbeats are back.)
