Spoek Mathambo: Control + free download

Thanks to Jersey City’s excellent WFMU for turning us on to this amazing track and video—the song is a year old, and the video has been out since February, but it’s the first we’ve seen of it.

South Africa’s Spoek Mathambo covers Joy Division‘s “She’s Lost Control,” putting a creepy, apocalyptic spin on a post-punk classic. The song’s been many times over the years, but you’ve never heard it quite like this.

You’ll find the song on Spoek Mathambo’s 2010 album Mshini Wam, a singular slab of Afro-futurism that ought to appeal to fans of Moombahton, Buraka Som Sistema, and all manner of left-field bass music.

Spoek recently signed to Sub Pop, and has a new EP co-produced with Copenhagen’s Chllngr coming out in late July; keep reading to download a free track from the record.
