Split Pot EP
Fomat B [Opossum Recordings]
28 February, 2008 | 9.58PM- Section: Music Reviews
Format:B (aka Franziskus Sell and Jakob Hildenbrand) have steadily honed their brand of brash, snappy techno with their work over the last year, appealing in equal measure to murky minimal lovers and post-electro party-heads alike.
And while this typically direct EP won’t win any awards for innovation, it’s the sort of punchy, upfront fare that’s guaranteed to rock the floor.
‘Full House’ makes use of a walloping bassline and gnarly FX spirals to squeeze out maximum speaker-busting loudness from its components, while ‘Bad Beat’ is a looser, less direct but no-less devilish alternative.
Best of the bunch is the sharp staccato march of ‘Rabbit Hunt’, which is almost comically ominous in tone, but laudably pulled off with pumping finesse.
Anyone with an aversion to those ubiquitous ‘rat-a-tat-tat’ noises you hear in so much dancefloor minimal may be less enamoured, however – every track here is full of ‘em.
If you’re a fan of the tracks on this release, it’s also worth checking Jakob’s slamming collaborations with Red Robin on Trapez Ltd for more hi-octane minimal thrills.
