Special Place / Druggy
Special Place / Druggy
Sub Focus [RAM Records]
28 August, 2007 | 3.00PM‘Special Place’ has actually been knocking about for an awfully long time on dub-plate before this eventual release.
As such it sounds a tad out of date compared with Sub’s latest tracks – he’s such a cutting-edge producer that’s his sound is always moving forward.
Still, this can’t take away from the fact that ‘Special Place’ is a mini-anthem.
Big, brazen, synths and epic, rising strings prepare you for a trademark kick and snare roll out and dirty sub / square wave basses on the drop.
These are punctuated by some of the intro melodies on the last four of each set of eight bars.
‘Druggy’ is pretty aptly named.
Bizarre vocal squelching samples precede a melody comprised of what sounds like a mad drummer tapping out a rhythm on frozen metal pipes with a wooden spoon.
The beats – as you’d expect from Sub Focus
– are verging on perfection within the current vogue of D&B.
The breakdown is very different from the rest of the track which really makes ‘Druggy’ feel complete.
Expect warm, filtered pads on top of a super-happy square wave arpeggiator.
‘Druggy’ sums up in audio form what drugs do to you – it will make you feel many different emotions within a short space of time.
