South America Uncovered: Part 10: Mestiza Records
South America Uncovered: Part 10: Mestiza Records
30 October, 2007 | 1.30PMThe spring has come to South America, and along with it are the new winds of music and a new label with them.
Mestiza Records
from Mar del Plata, Argentina, is the new kid on the block.
It’s a label that gives a fresh perspective to the scene.
Mestiza Records is an established label, but has only recently released its first songs on Beatport.
We talked with the label owner and artist, the very young Nicolás Coronel.
The Label Owner
Coronel considers himself “a DJ before a producer” because he, as so many others, started DJing about 12 years ago and has played in many key places in Argentina.
He has worked with artists from Argentina and America like Juan Pablo Graziano and Mark Slee (aka Palivaccini).
When the label started in December of 2006, it released what became a very successful track from Nicolas called ‘Leoniren’, which was supported by many artists, such as Hernan Cattaneo and Martin García.
This first splash contained remixes from Nikos Diamantopoulos, a house old school artist from Greece, along with Militos T, also from Greece.
Like Mestiza Records, Coronel focuses mainly on house, but also integrates deep house and even breaks — particularity between music from other labels from South America.
“One of the styles we focus here is deephouse with all its variations.
“I am good house music fan and of course, deep house is a part of that.
“In South America, you can’t find many deep house labels, so this is one way that we can make a good contribution to the scene.”
The Artists
Some of the artists that Mestiza Records
has are Marcelo Vasami from Buenos Aires, V-sag & dPen from Greece, Buenos Aires Deep from Argentina, a trio from Mexico called Sjunkes, Ocinirom & Kpax from Buenos Aires, Federico Epis from Uruguay (who has recently signed with the Audio Therapy label and has the support of DJ Sasha), and producers from Greece by the names of Soundgas CVC and dTolio.
Coronel doesn’t see the label’s Greek producers on this South American label as a departure.
“Greece is one of the countries that has been getting more and more new talent.”
Mestiza Records is already on other portals, but for Coronel, Beatport offers more than the others.
“We can work with the WAV format, for example.
“Also, the most prestigious artists are on Beatport.”
The Future and New Winds on the South American Electronic Scene
According to Coronel, Mestiza Records is 100% independent.
The label is just starting, but it has ambitious plans for the future, such adding artists from various places from around the world, such as England, Australia, Greece, and Georgia.
There are also conversations with Dousk to work on tracks.
As a producer, Coronel will be supported by Hernan Cattaneo, Randall Jones, Martin García and other artists.
Mestiza Records is a label with a unique perspective from South America, collaborating with its fellow artists from Greece and other countries, and proposing a new way to see house in South America — a place that belongs mainly to electro and progressive.
Its artists have a lot to offer to South America, and to the world.
