South America Uncovered: Part 7: Brazilian Labels Volume 1
South America Uncovered: Part 7: Brazilian Labels Volume 1
3 October, 2007 | 8.34AMBrazil is a vast land full of all forms of music — and electronic music is no exception. We wanted to know about the excellent electronic labels that exist right now, and to draw a deeper picture of one of them, Dasound, we investigated the way they operate and make music.
Dasound is an idea that started back in 1997 with Demu Mix, DJ Fabio Lapetina and Miss Cloud.
The reason for its existence is the same as many labels in South America: to showcase and promote the music of South American artists, especially from Brazil.
We talked with two of the most important people behind this quite successful Brazilian label: DJ Miss Cloud and Demu Mix.
Miss Cloud
Miss Cloud [right] operates Dasound, one of the most organized labels in all of South America.
Miss Cloud is constantly working to release music.
When she isn’t promoting new releases, talking with Dasound artists or creating promotional pages, Miss Cloud can be found exchanging opinions with people closely related to the world of electronic music.
“Dasound works mainly with tribal, progressive and house, but we are now starting to work with more styles under our sub labels,” explains Miss Cloud.
“Those sub labels are Hatchys, Dahalls, Brainwash and Cordel.
“The idea behind setting up these labels is that we can release good music of any style.”
There is a long roster of artists working on Dasound, but the main artists are Demu Mix, Deep’n Soull, DJ Lapetina and Doctor Crazy.
Miss Cloud also describes other artists that aren’t as well-known — “great singers like Joe Welch, Leopold Nunan and the brand new guy called Zepe”.
“The Brazilian musical tradition is to blend foreign sounds with the local flavor,” Miss Cloud says of the current scene.
“And Brazil has always had fertile ground for music.
“Clubs here play a lot of mainstream music, but they are also looking for new styles.
“Electro and minimal are like any other phenomenon: only the really good artists survive after the heat.”
The Good Old House Artist.
Demu Mix [right] has been making music for around a decade, and works mainly within house styles and as a good ‘Latin Houser’ who often experiments with new sounds.
He describes himself as being “in love with music” and considers it a pleasure to work with his passion.
Demu Mix played in clubs for more than 20 years and is one of the minds behind Dasound.
“I think House is just starting here in Brazil.
“One of my dreams with Dasound is to help promote all good music, including electro and minimal.
“I think that those are 2 strong styles, but I’ll bet on house music forever — it’s the fundamental rhythm.”
Demu Mix’s has huge faith in the producers of Brazil.
‘There are great artists here; I especially like Gui Boratto and Deep’n Soull.
“Every artist who visits Brazil can feel the power of our sound, and the scene is growing by the day.”
He has recently released the full-length ‘The Album’, and is working on a forthcoming release entitled ‘Delirium’.
‘Delirium’ will have ‘awesome contributions’, as described by Demu Mix, and will be released exclusively on Beatport in October.
It’s a Brazilian House Party.
Dasound is home to many styles with the South American — and of course Brazilian — identity marked clearly on it.
There are solid artists like Demu Mix, prestigious artists like DJ Fist and emerging artists like DJ Lapetina [right] and Deep’n Soull.
If you are looking for something to start the party with lots of congas and Latin, batucada percussion, it’s time to turn up the heat with Dasound.
