Terry Grant’s got a way with deadpan female vocals that nonetheless convey all sorts of darkness: Check out 2006’s “Misery”-like monologue ‘I’ll Kill You’ on ‘Bedrock’, his debut release.

The package of the Ohio-born producer’s latest single ‘Songful Bird’ contains two cheeky ‘Alive In ‘85’ mixes – as in 1985, with the ‘Borderline’ synths to prove it.

But the nod to pop can’t cloak the inherent eeriness of the vocal, which comes to the fore on the aptly titled ‘Dark Redux’ and the ‘Deep Vocal Mix’.

There’s something artful and rare about a vocal that could fit into a deep house set sonically, but doesn’t contain the usual markings.

It’s no ‘Cure And The Cause’ – it’s glassier, a bit more stoned – but this ‘Bird’ is in the same flock.
