Sonar 2008 review: Ovum Vs. Be As One, Club Fellini

Last night the door at Club Fellini in Barcelona resembled a Miami flustercuck, a mass of people pushing and shoving their way to the front in a disorderly fashion.

With Josh Wink’s Ovum Recordings in one room and Israel’s Shlomi Aber pushing his Be As One sound in the other, the party was way oversubscribed.

It didn’t feel like a normal Wednesday night in Barcelona.

But this is no ordinary week – with Sonar 2008 taking place some of the world’s most important electronic music figureheads are in the city, and a good portion of them were hanging out in the back room of Fellini.

In one corner Britain’s the Audiofly boys could be seen joking around, whilst some crew from London’s Fabric club were doing shots at the bar.

Funk D’Void aka Francois Dubois was there too plus a sprinkling of music journos and photographers.

Davide Squillace on the decks

Barcelona’s Davide Squillace jumped on the decks in the main room and started pushing chunky, effective funky techno and minimal which sounded supreme in the low-ceiling club.

Through the speakers came a new remix of Whatever Girl’s classic track ‘Activator’ (which Deep Dish remixed supremely) and Beatportal ran into the DJ booth to find out who did it.

“It’s a new remix by Maaaarco,” replied Davide with one hand on the decks.

By Maaaarco, Davide meant Marco Corola, and word has it the remix won’t ever be released. Boo [check out the Deep Dish remix in the player below].

Josh Wink prepares to spin at Fellini

The atmosphere in the club remained on high octane, and as Ovum boss Josh Wink jumped on the decks it went into overdrive.

Wink pushed twisted acid house grooves and new tech house beats which the crowd lapped up with glee.

Everybody seemed to be up for a hard party; no doubt the excitement of being in Barcelona for Sonar being the catalyst for the extra energy.

Beatportal started chatting to two Norwegian girls who seemed a little perplexed by the crazy party atmosphere.

“We are in Barcelona for a holiday and just felt like going to a club,” said one of the girls.

The Norwegian girls give in to techno

“Do you like techno?” I asked her.

“Not really I like hip hop and pop,” she said, but after a couple of shots and some gentle persuasion she was dancing her socks off on the dancefloor like the rest of us.

It’s always fun to see outsiders getting into the groove.

As the music and lasers combined into a wall of stimulation, the night echoed away into the narrow streets of Barcelona.

Not bad for Day 1 of Sonar.
