Sonar 2008: Radio Slave interview
20 June, 2008 | 2.11AMRadio Slave
is one of techno’s most prolific producers - just check out all the excellent tunes he’s made in the player after the break.
Beatportal caught up with Radio Slave aka Matt Edwards for a quick interview in Barcelona during Sonar 2008.
How’s Berlin been treating you?
I moved to Berlin for personal reasons not for the music scene there, but the club scene happens to be amazing there.
A few DJs like Marcel Dettmann
took me under their wing and really looked after me.

Since moving to Berlin you’ve been very productive, and this is probably the most prolific time in your career, isn’t it?
I’ve been busy.
And some of my tracks have been well received.
The thing is, I make music for soundsystems, nothing else.
I’m not one of those artists who makes tracks for an album, or for home listening.
Some people say my music is boring or too long, but I don’t mind because I never intended for it to be played anywhere but in a dark club.
Go to a club and hear my music on a loud sounsystem and you won’t be able to say it’s boring.
Your remix of Mlle Caro, Franck Garcia ‘Dead Souls’ recently blew up.
Did it [laughs]? I don’t pay attention to sales really, although just recently I’ve started to get into the whole digital thing.
I used to be all about vinyl, but in September my label Rekids
is going to go digital on Beatport.
Digital I’ve realized is really important for A&R so we’re going to do digital releases first and if it’s well received we’ll do a physical release.
Physical is still important as it has become a collector’s item.

Suck on them: Rekids famous ‘No Sleep’ cover art
I’ve always loved Rekids design style.
I actually came from a typography background so fonts and design are really important to me, especially when it comes to building a brand.
We did a release cover recently for ‘No Sleep’ that featured my friend’s ugly blistered dirty feet - he’d been out for three days solid and was wearing these pointy shoes which screwed his feet.
For me, it was the perfect cover art.
