Sonar 2008: Italoboyz interview

The Italoboyz [a] smashed their way into the minimal scene last year with the opera-sampling track ‘Viktor Casonova’ [check it on page 3 of the player below] which Ricardo Villalobos caned for many months.

Last night the Italoyboyz were spinning at Club Liquid in Barcelona and really impressed Beatportal with their animated and fun take on minimal and tech house.

We grabbed Federico Marton from the Italoboyz after their set for a quick chat.

‘Viktor Casanova’ sampled opera, and your track ‘Bahia’ had an equally quirky sample. Are strange samples becoming the Italoboyz sound?

We listen all the time to nice different music like classical, or funk and when we hear a nice sample we try to use it as the basis of a track, like as a loop or maybe as the main break.

We like that contrast in music, between the electronic elements and other things.

There’s so many FX in electronic music, so we prefer to use more organic live instruments.

When the two of you were DJing just now, it looked pretty complicated. Can you explain your DJ set up?

When we DJ, we both play together off Traktor DJ Studio 3 and laptops.

Me and Marco have been DJing together for a long time, and although we have the same taste in music, we interpret it in different ways.

A track is nothing more than a tool for DJs, and it’s interesting to see how different people use that tool.

What’s your favourite track at the moment?

It has to be Mastiksoul ‘Macaron’ which came out in 2006.

It’s such a funky tech house record and I love the vocal ‘Macaron, macaron’!
