Soma Compilation 2007

Various Artists [Soma Recordings]

Soma’s Glaswegian operation is one of techno’s key fortresses.

Names like Alex Smoke or Funk D’Void are some of the sound’s biggest artists as a result of the eagle eye label bosses Slam have spied on the scene over the years (and let’s not forget that without them we wouldn’t have Daft Punk either, who signed with Soma to release their groundbreaking debut, ‘Homework’, in 1997).

This year the label yields another impressive crop of releases, and its no surprise that Slam turn in our favourite track from them in 2007.

Azure is big room melodic end of night techno that reaffirms Stuart and Order as two of the scene’s biggest players (and while you’re at it, check out the excellent Radio Slave and Samuel L. Sessions remixes).

Alex Smoke delivers the minimallist’s favourite remixing The Unknown Wanderer ‘Don’t Start Just Finish It.’

It’s typically Smoke — a mix of futuristic melodies and classic techno beats.

Silicone Soul’s ‘3AM’ is classic Soma sounding techno melody, while veteran producers The Black Dog add to that blueprint with ‘Cost II’.

Lee Van Dowski adds to the tension with the ‘The Strike Pandemonium,’ an ever-building percussive techno workout.

Funk D’Void adds the deep house touch with the Your Body Mix of ‘Lovin’, while Vector Lovers showcase Soma’s electro tastes with ‘A Field’ and their remix of My Robot Friend’s ‘Rapture.’
