Soda

Michael Fakesch [K7 Records]

The original of Michael Fakesch’s Soda although not sounding like a record you would expect to come from Berlin (there isn’t anything minimal about this track) undoubtedly does owe something to Brighton’s now Berlin resident Jamie Lidell.

Michael Fakesch [a], like Lidell, layers smooth soulful vocals (Taprikk Sweezee) over an electro pop, broken beat, sound track.

Whilst there is without doubt something very catchy about the chorus and the opening of the track and perhaps does have the potential to get a few skinny jean clad booties shaking across the trendier of Europe’s dance floors, it soon peters out and becomes a few ghetto licks that serve more as a signal for a rush to the bar as opposed to the podiums.

This is where Gomma boys Munk step in.

Removing the warbling repetition of the original and by splicing a dark, electro baseline under the vocals, they have crafted a late night, synth funk disco noir monster, full of reverse beats, kick drums and reverbed squelches.

The other two mixes come courtesy of Andi Toma of Mouse on Mars, which does nothing to increase the quality of the original and is well below the bar set by the Munk mix.

Whilst the Break Yo Head Version not only contains an annoying faux hip hop title but is a completely pointless addition.
