Free Your Mind
Social Being [Tuning Spork Extra]
12 July, 2007 | 7.57AMNever one to shy away from speaking his mind, Jay Haze
now invites you to ‘Free Your Mind’ and launches Tuning Spork’s sub label Tuning Spork Extra in the process. Here Haze hooks up with Ricardo Villalobos
for their first collaboration since 2004, and it’s what appears to be a bit of a Berlin summer love-in.
This cut certainly casts some sunlight on the pair’s usual minimal darkness.
As you’d expect with Ricardo on board, this one’s a real work out, clocking in at around the 13 minute mark.
The Main Mix begins with neat, modulated synth squirts and the speedy introduction of a rolling, jerky bassline.
Villalobos’s characteristic percussive subtleties are here in abundance, with the crunchy layers sliding satisfyingly into the mix as the minutes ease by.
Melody is of the warm and delayed kind, with the ‘hook’ giving a classic house or even Balearic feel to things.
This is one of those numbers where the open hats emerge and get you locked into the groove.
The Guitar Mix further emphasises the original’s dubbed out, Balearic vibe.
A moaning solo wades around in heavy reverb territory and an almost indistinguishable male voice mutters away between the beats.
The audio ants that are the percussion parts are still present, scurrying busily around the frequency nest.
This track comes across as two top-drawer producers getting into the zone and both working off the same feeling.
In the right DJ’s hands, this is destined to frequent the warmer months of summer and beyond.
