Snowbombing with Sasse, Tayo & The Glimmers
4 April, 2011 | 4.47AMThe hills are alive—yes, with the sound of this music—as Mayrhofen, Austria celebrates the 12th annual Snowbombing Festival. What better way to usher in the spring than by getting a sunburn on the slopes by day, then limbering up tired limbs by night with Jaegermeister shots and non-stop dancing? Throughout the week, six venues feature an A-list crop of artists, from Magnetic Man and Fatboy Slim to Carl Craig and Ewan Pearson.
We checked in with Moodmusic head Sasse
, breaks/dubstep troublemaker Tayo
, and disco savants The Glimmers
to find out what’s in store.

Have you played Snowbombing before?
I’ve played Snowbombing three times in the past five years. It’s basically my winter holidays and end of the cold season meet-n-greet with lots of friends and colleagues.
The first time I went I was kind of surprised that so many UK people were attending the festival. But to have a bit less Germans, as a Finn living in Germany, is nice for a change. The drinking habits of the UK crowds at Mayrhofen are also more similar to the Scandinavian style, which I like!
How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?
As always, I come with my family and stay the whole week. It’s about skiing but as well to meet friends and artists I’ve missed before. And the surroundings are so obscure: where in the world could you have Moodymann, Ewan Pearson and yourself on the same bill in a trashed-out apres-ski discotheque—that’s what I call fun. Also the disco-meets-whatever floor up on the mountains is a place to be in the afternoon: sun is shining and the Jaeger tea is doing its wonders. Lovely.
What have you planned for your set?
I have the honour to start the night at the Bruck’n’Stadl, which is an original old-school joint, so I will do a nice warm-up set of the latest stuff I’ve bought, some exclusive stuff from Moodmusic, and the good old classics from vinyl, of course.
What festival survival tips do you have?
Well, every night is special in a way, you never know where you might end up in a rush of Jägermeister! I’m looking forward to our night at Bruck’n’Stadl with Jamie Jones, Dixon and myself. It’ll surely be something special—but the line-up is just so insane, so hard to say, really. I think I will spend my nights between Schlüssel (on Wednesday with Henrik Schwarz playing live alongside Zabiela, among others) and Brück’n’Stadl where most of the electronic house heads are heading. Thursday night at Brück’n’Stadl should be special as well, with Ewan Pearson and Space Dimension Controller joining John Digweed.
Skis or snowboard?
Old school, baby—I’ve been doing slalom since 1985. Never tried a snowboard, but I think at my age it’s ok to do what you feel you can do the best—and avoid accidents…

Have you played Snowbombing before?
This is my seventh year, I think—always doing Tracksuit parties with some amazing guests. Good times.
How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?
I’ll be there most of the week, and I want to see Carl Craig. But I think I’m on the same time, which is a gutter. Looking forward to Skream’s disco set at my party on the Monday.
What have you planned for your set?
Planned?! Ha! Good music, loudly. The specifics I’ll deal with closer to the time. Got a lot of good new music from the likes of Darksky, MJ Cole, Blawan, Bassbin Twins, Skream, Peverelist and more if I wanna go that route, or lots of old-school garage, maybe. Tempted to throw in an hour of ‘90s drum and bass, too, so who knows…
What festival survival tips do you have?
Like any of these nutters will listen… pace yourself or you’ll be finished by Thursday. Don’t overdose on cheese. Do overdose on those hog sandwiches opposite the main lift, tickle Mike Cuban’s testicles if you see him ‘cos he loves it, and do Red 7 beginning and end of your day. It’s a joy.
Skis or snowboard?
Snowboarder. Standardly.

The Glimmers

Have you played Snowbombing before?
We did Snowbombing once before, back in 2007. It was great, really good fun. I think it has grown now, if you see the line up they have this year.
How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?
We’re staying for three days, and we play the first night (Monday). So after the first night it is a little holiday. Looking forward to hang out in the mountains. I did not exactly plan to see someone in particular. I’m going to see where we end up every day so it is more surprising.
What have you planned for your set?
A party set, nothing too serious. That’s our goal: playing crowd pleasers with an edge all night long and get them partying.
What festival survival tips do you have?
For this festival: sunglasses and sun protection.
Skis or snowboard?
I’m a skier and Mo is an “apres skier”!
