Single of the Week: Argy ‘Unreliable Virgin’

Single of the Week: Argy ‘Unreliable Virgin’

Having exploded onto the scene with his 2005 latino minimal track ‘Love Dose’ 22-year-old Argy [a] has since become one of the hottest properties in techno. He’s back with a new two-tracker on Cocoon Recordings [l] and lead track ‘Unreliable Virgin’ is a whopping dancefloor destroyer, capable of taking the roof off any club.

Shimmering techno loops combine with huge synths and smart key strokes to create a masterful melange of techno and minimal trance (listen to it in the player below).

B side ‘Malena’ is also a tasty souful techno record.

Beatportal caught up with the Berlin-based Greek to find out more about his music.

What are your studio sessions like?

“In the beginning it was more like sitting down and messing around with sounds until something came out.

“Nowadays I don’t do that anymore.

“That’s not the point of music expression, for me at least.

“I have to feel something and have an idea of something that I would like to compose before I sit down.

“On the other hand, experimentation is also a great thing because it keeps things fresh and moving.

“But my music always has to tell a story in the end.”

How did you first get into electronic music?

“I think that the first work of electronic music that really impressed me was Kevin Yost’s ‘One Starry Night’ album.

“That was back in 1998 and the clarity of sound as well as the electronic solo synths really impressed me.

“Of course I am talking about pure electronic music with no vocals because before that I was into early 90s pop which still had a lot of electronic elements.”

How would you describe the music you make?

“My music is electronically made but it’s not all electronic.

“For the music I’m known for, I would say that it was the closest thing to me that could be produced with the least equipment and people.

“The DJs who play my music respect the women on the dancefloor.”

Where do you think dance music is going?

“I can only talk about dance music around house and techno because there is much more going on in electronic music as a genre.

“To be honest I think we are heading towards a very good era.

“The music has never been so good and the quality is increasing all the time.

“Labels are getting more careful about what they release and people don’t spend money on any record like they used to do when minimal or any other movement was new.

“Clubbers are getting smarter and smarter at least in most of the cities, and they know what they want and if they don’t get it they simply won’t dance.

“That makes DJs and producers more careful and disciplined.

“Another great thing is that many artists from different dance styles have been coming together lately.

“I feel like we are entering a ‘free thinking’ movement.”
