Simple Records celebrates 50 releases
9 February, 2011 | 12.03AMWill Saul’s Simple Records
recently racked up its 50th release, and in good Simple fashion, the nine-track package (simply titled ”Simple 50th”) packs an outsized punch. Alongside five tracks from Will Saul
and his studio partner Tam Cooper
, there are remixes from longtime Simple signee Sideshow
and rising hotshots Art Department, Wolf + Lamb, and Slow Hands, along with an exclusive mix by Saul of the best of the label’s output.
Founded eight years ago, Simple is the truest kind of passion project, launched by the veteran A&R scout as an outlet for the music of his favorite artists. Between core artists and remixers, its extended roster from over the years reads like a who’s who of contemporary electronic dance music: Sideshow, Infusion
, Swayzak
, Mathew Jonson
, DJ T.
, Jeff Samuel
, Phonique
, Sebo K
, Jesse Rose
, Isolee
, Konrad Black
, Jimpster
, Motorcitysoul
, Marc Romboy
, Alexkid
, Gui Boratto
, Partial Arts
, Tobias.
, Jim Rivers
, Shur-I-Kan
, Ian Pooley
, Brett Johnson
, Mike Monday
, Psycatron
, Shaun Reeves
, Seth Troxler
, Adam Marshall
, I:Cube
, Deetron
, Prosumer
, Steve Bug
, DJ Sprinkles
, Roman Fluegel
… Beyond just the depth of Saul’s Rolodex, though, what the label’s catalog primarily proves is his curatorial sensibility, with obvious hits balanced by more idiosyncratic B-sides and remixes designed to extend the label’s aesthetic to the furthest reaches of the underground. If Simple’s list of affiliated artists is a trainspotter’s fantasy league, its catalog is simply a dance-music lover’s dream come true.
In honor of the occasion, we asked Saul to select 10 key records from the label’s history and tell us a bit about them. For anyone who dreams of launching a label for the right reasons—and succeeding—start your research here.
Walkner.Hintenaus, “Kingdom” [Simple Records]
The first release on the label! Where it all started. Listening to it today it sounds like something I’d sign to Aus… Futuristic broken beats, breaks, and beyond was the musical policy for the first few releases on the label. I have lots of good memories of DJ trips to Austria to play at Flex in Vienna with Uwe and Freddie (the guys behind Walkner.Hintenaus).
Will Saul, “Cliff (Infusion Remix)” [Simple Records]
This record and the remix in particular unquestionably saved us from going bust as a record label. The first 4 releases had all lost money, as we’d made all the mistakes that new labels make, but Pete Tong got behind the Infusion remix on Radio 1 and this ended up selling very, very well.
Sideshow, “Slide (Mathew Jonson Remix)” [Simple Records]
Fin (Fink
on Ninja Tune
/Sideshow
on Aus) was integral to me starting the labels and is one of my closest friends, so no top 10 of our history would be complete without him. This was Mathew’s first remix and marks a point in time where I was working at Koobla records (which then turned into Phonica under the buying of Simon Rigg) and getting my eyes opened to all things 4x4.
Will Saul, “Mbira” [Simple Records]
This was my first attempt at making a house record. I was heavily influenced by the melody and atmosphere’s of Detroit techno but wanted a more organic feel to the track I was making and this was what popped out the other end....
Will Saul, Space Between [Simple Records]
My and the label’s first artist album. A labor of love.
Phonique, “Gift (Jeff Samuel Remix)” [Simple Records]
This was the first release that we put out when Simple was just me. I had originally started the label with three other business partners, but after my album I bought them out and carried on alone. To be honest everything ran much more smoothly from this point on.
Tam Cooper, “Galactica (Jimpster Remix)” [Simple Records]
Just as no overview of Simple chart would be complete without a Sideshow record, Tam Cooper also needs a special mention. He’s released as Precision Cuts
with us and also is my right-hand man in the studio. The Jimpster
remix of this ended up being one of our all-time best sellers.
Will Saul, “3000AD” [Simple Records]
Taken from the Simple Sounds compilation. One of the records that I’m proudest of. I struggle to listen back to a lot of the music that I’ve made over the years, but I feel I got this one right.
Motorcitysoul, “Change You (Shur-I-Kan Remix)” [Simple Records]
The first single from Motorcitysoul’s artist album with Simple. Matthias Vogt and C-Rock as Motorcitysoul are another mainstay of the Simple family.
Will Saul & Tam Cooper, “Hi-Lo” [Simple Records]
This completes the journey to where we are now…
