Simon Baker interview

Beatportal cornered Simon Baker [a], currently one of the hottest producers in dance music to talk about his new track ‘Confused’, out today on Steve Lawler’s Viva Music.

The driving minimal techno record (check it in the player below) is blowing up big style and follows on from Baker’s recent ‘Plastik’ release.

The two tracks have proven that this Brit has real talent.

You seem to have the Midas touch when it comes to producing electronic music.

“Every time I start a new track, I go into it pretty open-minded and what comes out, comes out.

“I go through different vibes.

“One week I’ll have a more techno head on, the next week I might be feeling deep house.

“It really is a case of just seeing what happens really.”

Is that why ‘Confused’ is a bit clueless about its roots? One minute it’s minimal, the next it’s banging tech house. Or is that prog?

“I am open-minded about my music and I make what I feel.

“I really don’t like to pigeonhole my sound.

“I am influenced by house, techno, minimal, disco, electro – everything really.

“So maybe ‘Confused’ is a mix of all those genres, I dunno?!

“I think it’s down to the listener to decide.

“As long as it works on the dancefloor, that’s my main concern.”

You must be pretty chuffed that Steve Lawler [a] has signed ‘Confused’. What’s it like having big name DJs chasing you for music?

“To have the biggest names in the world asking you for your tracks is a pretty special feeling.

“It has taken years and years to get to where I am now, and it just makes it all worthwhile.

“I certainly don’t take it for granted, that’s for sure.”

So are you doing music full-time now, or do you still have a day job?

“Yes, I do it full-time. I packed in my day job a few years ago to concentrate on music.

“It was the best move I ever made, although a really hard one.”
