Short Circuit presents Mute at the Roundhouse, London
10 May, 2011 | 2.35AMThis weekend, Mute Records takes over London’s Roundhouse for Short Circuit Presents Mute, a celebration of the iconic label’s past, present and future. Richie Hawtin
, Moby
, Recoil, Erasure, Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher, Nitzer Ebb, The Residents, Liars, Thomas Fehlmann
, and Thomas Brinkmann are among the 30+ acts programmed for the two-day event, which also features films, lectures, workshops and installations.
From the humblest of origins—Daniel Miller founded the label in 1978 as a vehicle to release the minimalist synth-pop of his own project, The Normal—Mute has grown into one of contemporary music’s most enduring imprints, with a footprint that ranges from the top of the pops to the deepest black holes of the experimental universe. From Depeche Mode to Plastikman
, Bomb the Bass to Boyd Rice, Laurent Garnier
to M83, it might be easier to list the game-changing artists who haven’t been a part of Mute’s roster.
The two-day slate of live performances and DJ sets balances longstanding Mute acts with recent signings; among the special programming are a set from Can’s Irmin Schmidt and Kumo, exploring the catalogue of the Krautrock titans, and a DJ set from Daniel Miller himself.
Short Circuit Presents Mute is preceded on Thursday night by a special concert hosted by the Raster-Noton label, featuring the world premiere of a new collaboration by Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto. For the full weekend program, and to buy tickets, see the Roundhouse website.
For more on Mute, don’t miss Resident Advisor’s excellent interview with Daniel Miller, in which the label founder discusses everything from Mute’s newfound independence from its former owner, EMI, to his history as a holiday-resort DJ in the ‘70s.
