Shifting Gears
Shifting Gears (Stanton Warriors Remix)
Plump DJs [Finger Lickin Records]
10 October, 2008 | 2.17AMUnbelievably, the Stanton Warriors and the Plump DJs have never paired up before, so the partnership of two of the largest and most influential groups in breakbeat is a news event indeed.
Since ‘Shifting Gears’ was dropped by the Stantons at this year’s Glastonbury festival, the internet has been buzzing with rumours about the track’s imminent arrival, and finally those rumours have come true.
Taken from the Plump’s most recent album, ‘Headthrash’, ‘Shifting Gears’ is a more accessible release from the breakbeat pioneers, and is the third release to be taken from their album.
The Stantons, who won best DJs at this year’s Breakspoll awards, are infamous for their unmistakable ghetto, electro booty breaks and their remix showcases their flava.
Taking the original’s funk samples, the Stantons add a dirty grimy beat to underline the track.
Maintaining the hip hop vocals over the beats, it ploughs through. The funk stabs are then dropped in, looped and built up in quick succession until the beat hits back in, turning the original into a dancefloor killer.
Fans of both Plump DJs
and the Stanton Warriors
will not be disappointed. This track is both funky, grimy, dirty and unmistakably breakbeat.
At the time of writing this recommendation, the Stantons had five tracks in Beatport’s Top10 Breaks chart, which showcases their dominance of the breaks scene.
