She Was Sent Remixes
Turner [Orphanear Records]
27 February, 2008 | 9.43AM- Section: Music Reviews
What happens when two of Germany’s most introspective electronic producers get together?
Turner, who fits effortlessly between lopsided indie and techno melancholia, has invited Dial’s Sten to rework ‘She Was Sent’, which was originally released on his 2006 album, ‘Slow Abuse’.
Sten provides two versions, with glacial chords and sweet strings tripping over warm, fluid basslines on the main remix and soft-focused ambience on the alternative dub take.
While both remixes are pleasant and expertly put together, the end result is like being the kid who is given the keys to the sweetshop — the listener feels saturated, almost overpowered by the syrupy textures.
Turner has chosen Vince Watson as the second remixer, and while the Scottish producer’s Detroit techno-inspired sound seems like an odd choice, it proves to be an inspired decision.
Watson’s take on ‘Sent’ is tougher and more clubby, but still inventive.
A rolling electronic bassline is peppered with snippets of Turner’ lost boy vocals — and Watson’s use of summery, piano keys is the perfect counter balance in the track’s “light versus darkness” equation.
Maybe the end result sends out a signal to Turner to be even more adventurous when he commissions his next remix series.
