Setlist Essentials: Freude Am Tanzen podcast #4

When the Wighnomy Brothers announced that they’d be calling it quits at the end of 2009, it left a hollow feeling in many a clubber’s stomach: where would we go for their special brand of epic tag-team sessions?

The good news, at least, is that separation doesn’t seem to be slowing the Brothers down. To the contrary, stepping out from Robag Wruhme’s shadow gives Monkey Maffia a chance to shine on his own.

Monkey Maffia’s recent podcast for Freude Am Tanzen finds the bearded mixmaster digging deep into slow-mo house grooves, from the sensitively soulful to the rude and rambunctious.

Sticking mostly to recent cuts from labels like Quintessentials, Third Ear, Circus Company and Philpot, the set leans heavily on bluesy keys, sanded-down disco breaks and crackling drum machines.

If you’re in search of gravelly-spoken-word vocals, look no further: The Zohar’s ‘All the Family’, DJ Aakmael’s ‘Headknop’, and Wbeeza’s ‘All Those Beats’ all lay out moody meditations on the nature of house music, while Jagged’s ‘Hollywood’ features some sultry sex-ed tips, and Mike Dunn drops gruff charm over Andrea Festa’s unstoppable ‘The Sound of Lugano’.
