Sektor 8 EP

Total Science, Funky Technicians, C...

Total Science come hard with the ‘Sektor 8’ EP, boasting a 2007 “ReRub” of their awesome ‘Dubplate’ remix.

It’s a tall order to top the Total Science remix of Dubplate that was released about eight years ago.

If you can get over the untouchable status of the remix, you’ll absolutely adore this ReRub.

Featuring additional samples from the original record released in 1991, this ReRub’s mad, evolving effects and dipping, lead melody represents what dance music is all about – something cool, quirky and avant-garde.

‘Room To Breathe’ is another of Total Science’s excellently-named tunes, and is a brilliant progression of their sound.

Always pushing the boundaries of what is creatively possibly within a hi-tempo context, Total Science evidently delved deep into their subconscious to pull out something this creative and appealing.

How to describe this unusual beast?

Pads sampled from early ‘90s oldskool hardcore, a plodding beat enveloped in addictive reverb that will hook you hard, a brilliant lead vocal in the vein of Claude VonStroke, which is detuned to hell with chorus effects, and some beautiful, tear-jerking, ambient synths.

This release represents the future of drum & bass, and a remarkable creative achievement for its producers who have been in the game nearly four decades between them.

‘Sad Sat and Lonely’ by The Funky Technicians [an alias of Total Science] is a melancholy production wielding a pure tone bassline and incessant drum breaks, that dance floors will adore.

Unintelligible vocals help to immerse the listener deeper into this track’s hypnotic atmosphere, and so ‘Sad Sat and Lonely’ serves as a good complement to the other songs on the ‘Sektor 8’ EP.

Finally, we have ‘Unconscious’, which is the black sheep amongst the family of tunes on this release.

About halfway through, it features a rather superb example of how to make an effective build up in a dance music tune – budding producers therefore owe it to themselves to analyse this section closely.

Dark and brutal, the hi-EQ’d drums and synths in ‘Unconscious’ will have ears bleeding in the rave – so give it to ‘em proper, DJ!
