27 November, 2007 | 6.05PMMost UK readers will be well aware of Secretsundaze’s legendary summer parties, but for those further afield, Giles Smith and James Priestly have been rocking London’s Sunday afternoons with a peerless blend of modern techno and quality house for over 5 years now, so it’s about time they got their heads together and started a label.
This shiny two track sampler is as an apt a snapshot of their party’s inimitable vibe as you could ask for, with two slices of clean-cut, smartly crafted tech-house tinged with just the right amount of foot-shuffling depth.
‘My Friend is a Seahorse’ sees Priestly team up with Dan Berkson (of Berskon and What fame) for a dubbed-out, gently pulsing cut, with undulating pianos and sharp, uncluttered beats.
Deep enough for warm-ups and after hours, or indeed more intimate club settings, it’s a polished, thoroughly satisfying affair.
‘Warriors’ is lusher still, offering a slightly straighter, poppier approach.
Nicely harnessed percussive flickers roll unobtrusively in the background, while an optimistic plucked melody swells imperceptibly throughout the track.
Both are fine examples of how to do deep, groovy tech-house with style.
