DJ Fresh [Breakbeat Kaos]
14 December, 2007 | 3.23PM- Section: Music Recommendations
There are a lot of drum & bass kingpins returning to the fold after long hiatuses this month, not least DJ Fresh – a man who at one time was the undisputed champion of drum & bass production.
Fresh changed the way D & B was made forever, and so it goes without saying that there’s a lot of hype around ‘Scream’ and ‘Steam’.
The former is vintage Fresh.
It’s super-funky, with a crowd-go-crazy half-time intro and vocals that you can just tell are by Freshy boy!
The drop harks back to the unstoppable original anthems of his like ‘Dogs On The Moon’ and ‘Space Hopper’, with a shitload of bruising beats, wild organ riffs and of course that insane rolling bass thrown in for good measure.
‘Steam’ on the other hand is a breaks track that Fresh has been perfecting for many, many months.
Clocking in at 140BPM, it’s a bit like ‘Fasten Your Seatbelt’ by Pendulum but with a slightly more spaced-out vibe.
The included Freestylers radio edit is very welcome.
Rounding things off is another D&B number called ‘Witchdoctor’ that represents one of Fresh’s more abstract experiments.
Hear it on a dancefloor and you’ll know exactly what it’s all about.
