Scoop! Loco Dice’s DJ set-up in Ibiza
8 July, 2008 | 8.05PM- Section: Music News Topics: Beatport Blog, DJ Gossip, Ibiza
Skulking around behind the DJ booth, I watched from the shadows as Germany’s Loco Dice began to boot his laptop for his Amnesia DJ set in Ibiza.
Want to know what gear and technology he uses?

Loco Dice sets up his Macbook Pro
Loco uses a Macbook Pro by Apple as the brain of his set-up, running Native Instrument’s Traktor Scratch DJ software.
“What model?” I hear you cry.

Loco’s Activity Monitor ensures peak performance
We’re not sure, but the fact that Dice uses the silver Mac instead of the plain white or black one (which most DJs perform on) proves that he only uses “the best” and takes his DJing very seriously.
He has an illustration of Argentine Marxist revolutionary Che Guervara as his desktop picture.
Make of that what you will!

Loco’s headphones: Sennheiser HD25s
Headphone wise, Loco goes for the Sennheiser HD25s, which is the calling card of serious DJs.

Built for the road: Loco’s LaCie “Rugged” HD
Many choose the ubiquitous Sony MDR-V700DJ silver cans instead, which sound good and look undeniably sexy.
However, they break much more easily than the nearly indestructible HD25s.
Loco has a ton of tunes backed up in preparation for his DJ sets: a statement proved by the cute-looking LaCie “Rugged” Hard Disk that he takes wherever he goes [below right].
Zooming in on the picture, we’ve discovered that he uses the “Rugged” FireWire model [also available in USB 2.0] which comes in 120GB, 160GB, 200GB, 250GB, 320GB and 500GB, and can be bought here.
The “Rugged” series boasts a shock-absorbent rubber sleeve and protective aluminium shell.

Yellow means danger: the Korg Kaoscillator
We also spotted a garish, yellow box in Loco Dice’s DJ bag, which is a cutting-edge piece of technology known as the Korg Kaoscillator.
This mini synthesiser and sampler allows users to screw its pitch and filter settings by moving a finger across a vector pad.
The Kaoscillator comes loaded with synth, bass and drum sounds; can sample and resample loops, and even sequence drum beats.
Check out this video to see what Loco Dice’s Kaoscillator can do.

Classic gear: SoundBITE XL
Loco Dice also boasts a SoundBITE XL by Red Sound Systems, which is a staple tool of adventurous DJs in club booths around the world.
The SoundBITE XL, whilst not looking particularly pretty, has forged a reputation as reliably potent loop sampler.
You can get more info on it here.

Loco Dice’s crew help him set up
Finally, what would all this digital gear be without a nice, fat, warm, analog, tube-driven front end?
The club in which Loco was playing when these pictures were taken – Amnesia – funnels DJ mixes through an Allen & Heath Zone:V6 in room 2, which, for those that don’t know, is the sexiest rotary-encoded tube DJ mixer on the planet.

Perfect front end for that Loco sound: the Xone:V6
Now we know why they call him Loco!
