Sci.Fi.Lo.Fi. Vol.1
Andrew Weatherall [Soma Recordings]...
21 November, 2007 | 5.41PMIn what must be one of the smartest series diversifications, Soma turns its focus from the ‘hi fi’ techno of previous mixes by Alex Smoke
and Luciano
and commissions Andrew Weatherall
to dust down his rare seven inches.
The Rotters Golf Club chief’s transformation from electro futurist into nicotine-stained rock’n’roller over the past two years has been one of popular music’s most fascinating makeovers, but it is hardly unexpected.
Weatherall always had the sartorial elegance, a look that sits somewhere between Biggles’ dashing look and the bespoke tailoring of Sherlock Holmes’ opium-heavy London underworld, and his rock associations go right back to his earliest production/remix work with My Bloody Valentine and Primal Scream.
However, this is the first time that he’s been given the opportunity to present a glimpse of the music that inspires his non-dance floor excursions, and it’s a fascinating insight.
There’s swampy rockabilly from Gene Vincent and Hipbone Slim, The Strangeloves’ bubblegum pop classic ‘I Want Candy’, a creepy version of soul standard ‘Upside Down’ as well as The Cramps’ grungy punk ode to excess, ‘New Kind of Kick’.
If you’re looking for a soundtrack that reeks of seedy bars, broken dreams and bad deeds, then hop on this lo-ride.
