Spirit [Violence Recordings]
25 August, 2007 | 2.55PM- Section: Music Recommendations
Here we see Spirit’s evil alter ego take centre stage for a violent production.
‘Scanners’ is built around several layers of Reece-style synths that have heavy phasing effects on, which give everything a snaking, dirty vibe.
The beats contain vintage Spirit hi-hats and are slightly gated to give everything a choppy, head-bopping feel.
There are also some ghostly atmospherics knocking about; but in all honesty they can’t save ‘Scanners’ from being anything more than filler.
That’s not to say it’s bad – it isn’t – but it just isn’t as classy as Spirit’s releases on Shogun Audio this month.
‘Dead Zone’ continues where ‘Scanners’ left off – but it works much better this time around.
Expect panic-stricken synth bleeps that play second fiddle to a seriously dirty Reece made up of what sounds like square waves, sawtooth waves and white noise.
The drop is tight – featuring a drum break we forget the name of that featured on Future Cut’s classic Metalheadz release ‘Obsession’.
The breaks here are badass. Spirit has seriously screwed them with various FX and edits to make every new phrase kick off with a bang.
Chuck in a naughty spinback sample and it’s fair to say ‘Dead Zone’ has saved this release.
