SAYTEK AND KANIO AT NEW CLUB OPENING IN MANCHESTER THIS SATURDAY!

Hi ((Saytek)), how are you? What are you doing right now?
In the studio, jamming with some live material, pottering around and doing this interview of course ;)

You’re becoming infamous for your LIVE shows! This seems to be the direction for many artists in the scene right now, however your use of hardware makes your performance very different to the average laptop
show, and can you tell us more about this?
I think it’s a shame a lot of people use Live after there name when they are DJing with Ableton Live. But I like to consider my show a real live performance which is fully improvised .I create thousands of loops , synth lines and other raw elements and jam with them . Using hardware allows me to be more hands on. I can take my set in any direction I choose always creating brand new combinations of the parts.
By doing this I can really respond to a crowd, for instance I can create a unique one off break down by dropping the kick drum out of the mix for a while whist triggering series of a sound effect whist putting an FX on the rest of the drums and filtering the synth. Having this amount of control means my set will never ever sound the same twice!

What has influenced you over the years to create your alter ego Saytek?
It was elements of Detroit techno, dub and early tech house that where combined to create early Saytek releases. These influences still play a strong part in my music today. I think a lot of these sounds have found there way back into current house and techno with ethnic percussion and Detroit chord stabs being the basis of many of the tracks around at the moment. It’s the combination of these elements with a strong groove and bass line that in my view never fail to rock the dance floor.

Your album Saytek ‘Live from the Seal Pit’ was recorded whilst playing your LIVE show to a sea of sweaty ravers; the pressure must have been overwhelming?
To tell you the truth I always get a bit nervous before a show , but nerves help me to perform I had one thing in mind and that was to rock the packed Seal Pit … I managed to do that and the album turned out fine as well so happy days.

Your soon to be released second installment of the Zoo Project Album is recorded in the same way as your first. Fancy spilling the beans on the album to those who didn’t see it recorded?
Once again it’s a fully improvised live performance. Whilst the first album is more of a purist techno album with darker elements recorded in the Seal Pit, the new album allowed me to showcase some different material. It was recorded in the pool arena which was rammed. I was lucky enough to perform to over 2000 people and be filmed by DanceTrippin TV. The material I used was much more varied with some African, Latin and Jazz influences, deep driving tech house, and retro acid and of course some Detroit influences there as well. I am happy with the results and think it represents another side of the Saytek sound.

The Techno scene seems to be getting more and more political and the music has been sidetracked from its original roots, what are your thoughts on this?
Ha ha wherever there are people there is politics. I hate it but I think by keeping your integrity, working hard and remaining loyal to the people who give you a foot up it can be avoided. So I simply don’t get involved

For the technical readers out there can you tell us what equipment your live show consists of?
Roland mc 909 – like a studio in a box packed full of synths and drum machines including the Roland classics with loads of knobs and buttons for hands on control, also a trusty sampler and 16 track sequencer with mixer and mutes. It also has a pattern call so you can pull up any pattern you created without missing a beat.
Ableton 8 – needs no explanation I always use scene view with 8-16 bar loops/midi patterns I have created so no pre-arranged sections.
D16 Siverline pack – Drumazon , Nephron , Phoscyon – Really nice and convincing 303 , 909 and 808 emulation the fattest and most analogue sounding I have heard.
Novation XioSynth – Controller and synth for Ableton loads of knobs and nice hardware sounds
Pioneer DJM-800 – great mixer
Korg KP3 – Great version of the kaos pad great for hands on effects but mainly used for White noise!!!
Soundbite – Auto Loop Module – Great for resampling bits of my performance and twisting them up and layering them into my show in different ways.

What can we expect to hear from your performance for Anti:Clockwise @ Sub61? Any new tricks you have to experiment with?
I will be bring loads of live material with me so I will just be responding to the crowd, I can’t wait I think its going to be a wicked night!
