Say Whoa

Say Whoa

A-Trak [Kitsune]

Everybody knows that A-Trak [a] is Kayne West’s tour DJ, but what don’t we know about A-Trak?

Here are six more facts that could interest you about the new mish-mash, hip-hop global phenomenon.

1. He’s from Montreal, monsieur.

2. In 2007 he founded the very cool, Fool’s Gold Records, home to Kid Cudi [a], Big Sister et al.

3. He took home the DMC World Championship DJ trophy when he was just 15.

4. Is brother with Dave One, one half of Chromeo [a].

5. A-Trak [a] joined the ranks of LCD Soundsystem [a], Simian Mobile Disco [a] and Skream [a] by being the latest producer to make a special 45-minute track for Nike, for jogging enthusiasts to run along to.

6. ‘Say Whoa’ is A-Trak’s first 12” on Kitsune.

There’s the facts, but what about the music?

‘Say Whoa’ is an electro, hip-hop, mash up monster that could easily be the soundtrack to some college fraternity party.

A mad hybrid between Digitalism [a] and Crookers [a], this a jump up, booty shaking secret weapon that will get the drainpipe-wearing Camden Town types spilling 50p pints over their Converse.

With the deep throated, “They hear the bass and they say whoa” (which is very residual of Fatboy Slim’s ‘Star 69’), over an electro beat with some added Justice [a] style slap bass, this track builds up into a 4/4 house stomper.

A-Trak doesn’t just entertain us, he’s educating us and showing off his musical background at the same time.
