One of the weird things about touring as a DJ is that you wake up in one time zone and atmosphere, but you DJ in a completely different climate and zone the very same night.

Yesterday it was 80 degrees in Columbus Ohio, and everyone was smiley and friendly.

As we pull into the parking lot of Clutch Cargos club in Pontiac, Michigan it’s a different feeling.

The sky is grey, depressing and rainy, and the only people walking the streets look shifty and cold.

As the equipment gets loaded into the club, we ask one of the stage hands for a cab number.

“Yeah this ain’t really a cab area,” he says, as though cabs are like a force of nature, moving and living in their own habitats.

“The problem is they kept getting held up so no cabs come down here anymore.”

Detroit was listed as the most dangerous city in the United States in the 2007 survey of Safest and Most Dangerous U.S. Cities.

Which means the party tonight could be off the hook - Industry Boy has found that the best parties are sometimes in the most depressed regions.

Years ago in Bosnia, a Serbian once explained to me why they party so hard.

“We party hard, because we have hard lives,” he said.

Whilst Detroit is far from the war torn streets of Bosnia, the fact that the city is gritty and depressed might lead to an edgy dancefloor with a crowd excited to let their hair down.

We’ll see in a few hours.
