Dirty Funker [Spirit Recordings]

Sandman shows us how it’s done with a stinking, fetid, funky monster of an electro house boomer.

Probably inspired by the big, nasty Sandman destroying sections of New York in the hugely-disappointing laughing-stock that was the Spider-Man 3 movie, this production is made up of fizzing, resonant lumps of bass and heavily-compressed, funneled beats replete with cleverly-worked, cymbal crashes that ricochet all over the place and some subtle but vital metallic percussion that sneaks around deep inside the stereo field.

There are two distinct flavours in here which make ‘Sandman’ one of this month’s best electro house releases.

Firstly, its 1980s vibe, which is created by some tom-tom breaks played out with samples that epitomised this era’s synthy anthems.

Secondly (and this really is the deal clincher), the dirty rock, baby!

You don’t often get heavy metal-style guitar in electro house tracks, but Dirty Funker provides a shining example of how it should be implemented – not excessively, but in a well-edited, tidy fashion.

Dirty Funker uses restrained snippets of distorted guitar blasts through the proceedings, then on the bridge builds up in a style reminiscent of Metallica at one of their better concerts, only to pull it away expertly to fold things back into electro house mode.
