SAMC - Zizek is the place for Cumbia music

The Beatportal team arrives in Buenos Aires on Thursday morning for the South American Music Conference, which unfortunately means we’ll be just a few hours too late to check out the city’s infamous Zizek party, which is a hot spot for Cumbia music.

Cumbia is a fusion of old traditional Columbian music with new electronic sounds, and although it used to be considered dance music for the lower classes, it has found fans abroad, including US DJ Diplo [pictured], who likes it so much he’ll be bringing over the Zizek crew for a US tour in March.

The attention from abroad has given Cumbia a boost of credibility and now all sorts of trendy music mags like The Wire are touting Cumbia as the next big thing.

Argentina’s largest newspaper even nominated Zizek as one of the best parties in the country, which shows just how far Cumbia has come.

It’s a shame we’ll be missing Zizek this time, but funnily enough US music fans can check out Zizek for themselves just as we’ll be at SAMC trying to report on hot new local sounds.

Check out the track in the player for a taster of what Cumbia music is all about.

As you’ll hear it’s pretty groovy broken beat at roughly the same tempo as grime or hip hop, but it features more traditional South American drum sounds and musical notes, plus often lyrics.
