SAMC kicks off
4 March, 2008 | 12.17PM- Section: Music News Topics: South American Music Conference
The South American Music Conference (SAMC) in Argentina kicked off last night with the first in a series of conferences and ‘how to’ seminars at the music school EMBA.
The Beatportal team (we might call ourselves the B Team) doesn’t arrive in Buenos Aires till Thursday, but we had a spy there and he fed us some info and pics.
Seminar topics included how to start a home studio, methods of communication, basics on Serato, organizing parties and much more.
There were several hundred participants over the course of the day and many were hanging around in front swapping CDs and chatting about music in between courses.
There was also a panel discussing the role of label management and the world of digital music distribution.
On the panel were local Argentinian producers and labels owners: Onward (Martín Bonansea y Bs. As. Deep), Noize (Manuel Sofía aka MOS), Acktivism (Junior Lopez aka Flug) Espana, Unlock (Gonzalo Solimano) and Jonas Kopp [M-nus].
The panel was moderated by Ariana Ramos.
They discussed everything from how to get a label started to the basics of web promotion and other media; as well as the obstacles facing the music scene in South America.
From the sound of things, the scene of producers runs very thick in Buenos Aires and is very collaborative. There were about 30 aspiring producers in the audience alone.
The city is home to 12.5 million, and home to many underground clubs and parties that are electronic music friendly.
Tonight’s SAMC events take place at the Escuela Sonica, where it’s rumored there will be meetings on analog and virtual synths, music production and a panel with Argentinean music pioneer Carlos Shaw.
