SAMC interview: Victoria R

SAMC interview: Victoria R

Victoria R [a] is a rising star of the tech house underground in Argentina, so we grabbed five minutes with her to find out more about her style of DJing and production.

She had just stepped off a bus after a 13 hour journey coming back from a gig in Patagonia, in southern Argentina, but still looks every bit the model that she used to be before jacking in the modeling career for music a few years ago.

She’s a 21-year-old Argentinian, but her heritage is Greek, Italian and Yugoslavian.

What is it like being a female DJ in Argentina?

“Generally, as a whole people treat you with respect once they hear how you play. The music speaks for itself.

“But because I’m only 21-years-old sometimes my age is a problem for some DJs.

“A resident DJ once threw his drink all over my CDs because he was jealous of me, but that doesn’t happen too often!”

Can you explain a bit more about your style of DJing?

“I play mainly techno house, but I also play some minimal techno.

“The kind of records I like are from artists like Pig & Dan, Jerome Sydenham and Len Faki.

“I only play CDs, although I originally learnt how to DJ with vinyl that was given to me by Hernan Cattaneo.

“Hernan is a very nice guy, and he has a philosophy about passing records on to people - he says that if someone gives you a record, you must also give a record to somebody.

Apart from Patagonia, where else have you played?

“I’ve played Pacha in Buenos Aires and also Big One.

“I play quite a lot in Argentina and I also produce my own tracks.”

What labels have you had releases on?

“Acute Recordings, Off Side and The Sessions have all put out my music.

What’s your set up like for music production?

“I use Ableton, and I really like GForce Software too, plus virtual synths like the Minimoog and the Arturia.”
