re-acquaint themselves with an EP well within their comfort zone of US House.
The result could be described as somewhere around average, with both the artist and the label having scaled more dizzying heights previously.
‘Sacred Sex’ in its Original guise, is an up-tempo, loop-based affair, pitched somewhere between Detroit and Chicago.
In fact, stylistically, it manufactures a groove non-too dissimilar to Stockholm export, The Field, whose excellent LP on Kompakt from earlier in the year conjured a similar sort of hypnotic repetitiveness.
Where it was so successful, and perhaps where Blaze fall a little short, is in the shifting soundscape that sets the tone of the track in the more ambient, background areas.
This doesn’t mean to say however it’s a particularly bad effort; it’s just that at 11 minutes long, it doesn’t necessarily grab you by the balls and command your attention.
The ‘Rocket Rd’ mix takes things down a peg or two and is probably better off for it.
Warm keys, bit-crushed snares and floaty pads dance atop an entirely more relaxed groove.
The spoken female vocal that served as an a cappella intro on the Original is distributed across the track’s entirety, serving nicely to compliment the early evening feel the track evokes.
Certainly give the B-side a look if you feel in need of gently easing yourself into the night.
