Rustie: Glass Swords
Rustie: Glass Swords
13 October, 2011 | 5.26AMDefying the rote trappings of any genre yet to be named, Rustie’s debut long-player, Glass Swords, is a laser-armed adventure into the computerized inner workings of an ice cream machine. It’s what a Sega would sound like if someone threw one into a cotton candy machine and somehow ran the audio out. The Glaswegian’s work on previous EPs now seems remarkably restrained when compared to the vibrant neon audio onslaught of his new album, on Warp Records. Rustie’s genre-less electronic mayhem elucidates a kind of hazy brilliance you’ve likely never heard in one of, nay, the most controversial genre in today’s dance music world. (Dub....step? Yep. I said it.)
You won’t know if you love or hate it until you give it a shot. You’ll likely revel in the capricious melodic complexity (”All Nite”), loose count in the wavering time signatures (”Ultra Thizz”), or corn-ball along with the euphoric trance synths in a late ‘90s style (”Hover Traps”). Get it here, or check out Rustie’s other releases here.
