Here epic classical strings, deep rich basslines and organic live drums and keys combine on Roland Appel ‘Dark Soldier’ in a very Carl Craig sort of way. Soulful techno like this can sometimes disappear into a hole of mindless jazz bollocks but here the hotly-tipped producer manages to stay on the right side of his funk mojo. 

Austin Powers could get randy to this and indeed the deep house brigade have been falling over themselves to get a copy of ‘Dark Soldier’ ever since the track was played out at this year’s Sonar Festival in Barcelona.

Psychedelic music seems to be making a comeback at the tail end of 2007, and jazz-inspired minimal and deep house could be the next big thing.

Ewan Pearson is big fan of this track too.
