Robyn is dancing on her own

The Swedish pop singer Robyn‘s performance at Berghain a couple weeks ago was enjoyable, but odd: you don’t really expect to see her kind of stage moves, or hear her kind of blippy synth-pop, in that infamous temple of boom. But she and her backing band of two keyboardists and two drummers held their own well. They packed the place, too.

Arriving just 15 minutes before her performance started, I was left with the choice of standing in the far back of the room, where I’d be unable to see the diminuitive singer, or edging back by the DJ booth, with a sight line across the stage. I opted for the latter, meaning that the show sounded like ass: out of range of the room’s main speakers, I could only hear the stage monitors and drum kits. But it was worth it to get to watch Robyn up close and personal, as it were, especially when she traded looks with her bandmembers. From where I was standing, she didn’t look like a larger-than-life pop star; she looked like an actress trying very hard to pull off her role.

I don’t mean that in a bad way: in fact, it’s kind of charming. What I like best about Robyn is the fact that she seems very much like a DIY kind of pop star. There’s something oddly democratic about her whole persona; she gives the impression that anybody could do it, if they were determined enough. Just check the behind-the-scenes footage of her video shoot for ‘Dancing on My Own’, below, and see if you don’t agree.

Robyn’s ‘Dancing on My Own’ is out June 1, backed with mixes from Rex the Dog, Fred Falke [a], Azzido Da Bass [a], and more. The singles ‘Dancehall Queen’ (produced by Diplo), ‘None of Dem’ (featuring Royksopp), and ‘Fembot’ are out now.
