Robot Odyssey by the Motor City Sound Machine (Electronic Music Therapy)

Robot Odyssey is the latest mini EP by Motor City Sound Machine under the Electronic Music Therapy label.

The EP opens with “Cyborg Mechanic”, a twangy, metallic track with intermittent drums and shimmering, shifting chords. A key shift midway through keeps tension high and maintains interest. This is the most minimalist track on the EP, with heavy repetition and a clearly defined center.

“Gynoid Aura” is the second track. It begins with a primal beat and brings in spacy and hi tech curtains of sound. Robotic grinds and jangles keep the ethereal melodies from flying away. This is the most superior track on the EP, with the most advanced and intriguing sounds.

The closing track is “Teleporting Robot”, a fairly straightforward techno piece with R&B chords and an intricate beat. A heavily stereo-shifting Geiger counter noise adds a computer-music tone.

Altogether the music is well-crafted. The tracks are unique and inspiring, with diverse sound and a very clear “robotic” theme, but they are grounded in techno roots and technical beats.

The Motor City Sound Machine is the alias of Jamell Tyson, a Detroit based electronic musician. He is inspired by the techno culture of Detroit and utilizes a MIDI-triggered system.
