RobertaFlack (Martyn’s Heart Beat Mix)

Flying Lotus [Warp Records]

To start off with, ‘RobertaFlack’ had to be the stand out track from Flying Lotus’s phenomenal ‘Los Angeles’ album - its stunning ambience and soothing vocals took me back to my ‘Blue Lines’ days.

To then have this track remixed by Martyn [a], the king of everything that is heavenly and deep, is like pairing up the wonders of John and Paul, Kris and Kross, or Marmite with toast.

You will find it immensely difficult to characterise or pigeonhole the sounds of these producers, such is the dynamic and ingenuity in their sounds.

Martyn [a], himself describes his music not as being dubstep, electronica or house, but only as ‘Martyn Music’.

And this is where the beauty shines through, as the trip-hop vibes of the original are layered with deep house and the 2-step warmth of Martyn’s sound.

The combination of tribal percussion, penetrative bass, and multi-textural sounds give this a lush, almost addictive ambiance, yet it’s the applied vocals of ‘Dolly’ that set this track on fire.

Martyn has had a standout year with his remixes of TRG [a] and Shut Up and Dance, but this one really is the cherry on the proverbial cake.

One doesn’t get the opportunity to experience much vocal dubstep - producers tend to stay clear of the sound as if it’s a form of betrayal - yet this track glorifies the notion and radiates its alluring charm through its elegantly voiced tones.
