‘Ricky Ryan Edits’ Swedish mystery producer

‘Ricky Ryan Edits’ Swedish mystery producer

Ricky Ryan [a], the man behind Sick Watona and Avangardia is known for his editing and the effort he puts into preparing his DJ sets.

This time he has rearranged two of the Sick tracks, Sick 3 and Sick 4, to better fit into his sets.

But who is Sick?

We caught up with the Argentinian world famous DJ just before his taking off on a long trip over to Europe.

Many DJs do their own edits, but you have chosen to release these on your Avangardians series, licensing tracks from many labels to be able to do so.
How come you don’t want to keep your edits to yourself, like other DJs do?

I started a label for releasing my favourite music that is unsigned and needs a home and I’ve been re-editing music since I moved from vinyl to CDs in 2002.

One day I thought would be nice to release these songs I love playing.

I just wanna put out all the music I support and promote it too, to spread the word.

The Sick tracks 1-8 were pretty much made to fit into a Ricky Ryan set. You have a unique sound - how would you describe the music you play?

Cheers! I am such a fan of SO SICK, every SICK song is wonderful no matter the genre, all eclectic and effective and that’s exactly what I like to play or listen to anytime… I don’t care about genres, I dig what makes me feel good.

Do you feel you’re a part of a scene? Is your melodic sound a natural reaction to minimal techno?

I’ve always loved techno, lots!

I play all genres as long as I consider them musically special. Not always to play in a club, it’s OK to blend them in a promo mix one day, or listen to them at home or at a beach party.

Blending minimal techno with other genres and sounds is inspiring and good for the scene, big time, I think.

I am constantly seeking a balance, focused on the harmony and rhythm where both make me feel great…

Music for the body and the soul… like SICK music!

Which other DJs do you like?

Back in 2001 I heard Sasha’s San Francisco and Ibiza CDs on Global Underground.

I fell in love with this music and became a DJ. Sasha has been my main inspiration when it all started for me.

Also Digweed, Danny Howells, Desyn Masiello, Luke Fair… so many so good!

Five Fave Producers?

There are so many!

Tom Middleton is great, he can produce any genre and will always sound impressive!

You are leaving for Europe - which city are you looking forward to seeing, and what are your plans?

I’ll be meeting mates in studio and do some collaborations and remixes.

I will visit Barcelona, Valencia, Prague, Istanbul, Ekaterinburg, Amsterdam, London, Manchester, etc.

Are European clubbers different to South Americans?

When I come to Europe must play darker and more underground which is great, but when I play in Brazil I play more party music, brighter stuff and they go crazy…

It’s always nice to travel and meet a new crowd
