Dubfire [Desolat]
23 October, 2007 | 8.13AMThe writing seems on the wall for Deep Dish thanks to Ribcage.
If you’re a fan of the old school Yoshitoshi sound (the label the pair became famous for running in the 1990s), you’ll breathe a sigh of relief when you hear the next brace of tracks to come from Dubfire
.
Fans of the underground had long since written the pair off in recent years, as their releases became more and more mainstream peaking with chart hits like 2006’s ‘Say Hello’ or 2005’s ‘Flashdance.’
Despite the hits and the big money gigs, Ali Dubfire , one half of the duo, found himself in a creative cul de sac.
Deep Dish may be one of dance music’s biggest money spinning outfits, but for Ali, something just wasn’t right and full credit to him for having the guts to jack it all in to go back to his underground roots and reboot his career all over again.
‘Ribcage’, the first track on Loco Dice’s new label Desolat
, is a tense, strung out lesson in minimal funk that instantly sets Dubfire on equal playing terms with techno’s current crop of leading artists.
And best of all, it’s proof that underneath the trappings of ‘superstar DJ’ acclaim, Ali is still a raver at heart.
If you went to Minus’ Bar 25 party in August, you may have spotted him one metre from the front, on the floor with the rest of the ravers locked into the music all night long.
Bear this in mind as well as the fact that while many of his contemporaries are happy to sink into Superstar DJ cruise control mode, ‘Ribcage’ could be one of the comeback stories of the year.
We can’t wait to hear what’s next in store from him in any case.
