Mathias Tanzmann [Moon Harbour]
10 March, 2008 | 9.37AM- Section: Music Recommendations
Tanzmann’s Moon Harbour imprint has been quietly impressing fans of slick, modern house since its inception in 2000, but it’s taken label boss Mathias Tanzmann since then to release this debut album.
With the current winds of taste prevailing ever deep-wards, now seems like the ideal time for an album like ‘Restless’, straddling as it does the blurry lines between deep house, techno, minimal and dub.
Opening gambit ‘Swim’ shuffles amiably along, blending seamlessly into the drifting dub groove of ‘Flight Mode’, and on into the snazzy, toe-popping ‘Kutaisi’.
From here, Tanzmann gradually increases the pressure with each track, peaking with the rasping clatter-house of his minor hit ‘Bulldozer’.
It’s testament to his diversity as a producer, and indeed his instincts as a DJ, that the track selection remains engaging throughout, which is something of an achievement in the over-polished world of deep, techy long-players.
It may be a bit too tasteful for those who like their tech house with a hefty dollop of dirt, but for everyone else, it’s a warm, engaging collection that neatly blueprints the sound of 2008.
