Resdient Advisor chronicles Detroit’s Movement
Resdient Advisor chronicles Detroit’s Movement
19 May, 2010 | 12.58AMResident Advisor editor Todd L. Burns deserves some kind of an award for his oral history of Detroit’s electronic music festival. Published just yesterday, the article draws from 55 interviews to tell the story of the festival from every possible angle, gathering quotations from the likes of Anthony Shake Shakir, Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, Kelli Hand, Kevin Saunderson, Mike Huckaby, Richie Hawtin, Stacey Pullen, and dozens more.
The piece touches upon the festival’s turbulent history—covering the political infighting, the infamous feud between Carol Marvin and Carl Craig, the financial difficulties, the name changes, the rain—but it doesn’t take sides, and it never dwells on the negative. You’re left with a sense of awe for the passion and dedication of the people that have made the homegrown event happen, year after year, through thick and through thin.
This year’s Movement, once again produced by the city’s Paxahau crew, takes place May 29 through 31. If you’re heading to the festival, RA has also published a handy guide to Movement afterparties that’s well worth a look.
Read on for a selection of new charts from performers at this year’s edition, the 10th anniversary of America’s most important electronic-music event.
