Repair still standing with new release on Thoughtless Music
3 December, 2007 | 11.59AMProducing electronic music for over ten years, Toronto’s Thibideau brothers, aka Repair
, follow up their acclaimed releases for Sub Static and Dumb-Unit with an EP for Thoughtless Music
.
‘The Model B Chassis’ is an effective burst of clean-burning fuel, while ‘Still Standing Severely Damaged’ pays tribute to the everlasting sound of the Motor City.
Two of Cologne’s finest – Falko Brocksieper and René Breitbarth – turn in their impressive interpretations of the originals, while Noah Pred adds another take from Toronto.
We had a chance to catch up with Matt and Mark in their studio…
How long have you guys been producing?
The two of us have been producing electronic music for 18 years.
What keeps you inspired in the studio?
High quality hardware such as analog synthesizers, vintage samplers and other flexible tools to create a variety of sounds.
Capturing the feel of the intended idea that was created is important to us, as is the ability to do as much work in real time as possible with full hands-on control over a mix.
Who are some other artists you’re currently into?
There’s quite a few we could name.
Biosphere, Richard Davis, Mahogany, The Modernist, Mathew Herbert, Junior Boys, Hot Chip, Kraftwerk – and of course Rene Breitbarth and Falko Brocksieper.
How do you know Falko and Rene?
Mark and I started releasing music for Sub-Static around 2002.
After speaking with Falko, we decided to head to Cologne where Sub-Static was located at the time.
This is where we met Falko and Rene.
We all share the same passion to make electronic music, while Falko shares our love of vintage synthesizers – so we have quite a lot in common.
How has the Repair sound evolved over the years?
Repair started off in a much more minimal style, and has evolved to be richer with more context.
The addition of vocals on some of our past releases have taken it into a wider direction, which in turn lead to creating more complex arrangements.
The gradual improvement of our mixing environment has also increased the level of production.
Continually updating the studio and getting new gear has helped us to progress in our sound as well.
What makes Toronto the place for you?
Toronto seems to be the only city in Canada with so much to offer in every aspect of the music industry.
We’re just comfortable here.
It’s also a central location in North America with many cities relatively close by in the Midwest and on the East Coast, so it’s an ideal home base for touring.
You’ve been performing live for years. What’s the key to your potent live sound?
The key thing for us is to be hands-on with our equipment – our rule has been to stay clear of a laptop.
We sample our sounds from our collection of synthesizers at home, but it’s important for us to use at least one analog synth live so we can get that warm bottom-end out of our mix.
We don’t try to recreate our songs exactly too often, so in the end, we just try our best to have fun with it and see where the mix takes us along with our audience.
What are your future music plans?
We’re currently working hard to complete more material, both with and without vocals, with hopes to release all of it – and then of course tour it live.
