In the second of Beatportal’s Breakspoll exclusive interviews, we talk to Rennie Pilgrem, the Godfather of breaks and manager of the supreme Thursday Club Recordings.

The label is home to Rennie, Chris Carter and BLIM.

Rennie gives us his insight on who he thinks will win big this year, and shares his love for Beatport. 

What do you think was the best album of 2007?

I can’t recall a great artist album by a breaks outfit this year, which is a bit sad.

Best single?

Bassbin Twins ‘Woppa’ [released on Tayo’s Fabriclive.32 CD for Fabric].

This absolutely reminded me of why I liked breaks in the first place.

Instead of doing “electro lite”, this a heavily edited slice of breakbeat heaven — with a filthy bassline to match.

Best label?

Mofo Recordings.

I love the fact that they are reintroducing a big hop-hop flavour to the party and that they are not afraid to use vocals.

Best producer?

Baobinga.

With I.D. And Jhz (as Body Snatchers), this guy has made some fantastic tunes this year.

Tough and original.

Best DJ?

Elite Force.

He has always straddled breaks and house, and every time I’ve played on the same bill as him, he blows me away.

He stops me forgetting that the art of DJing is not just about mixing in records in time.

An inspiring DJ (and a great kisser).

Best website?

Beatport.

Without wishing to kiss your ass, you guys have become the leaders in selling dance music to DJs around the globe.

Well done.

(Shame the dollar is worth only slightly more than the Romanian Rouble though).
